Back in the day (I do not know why I like to use this phrase so much. It has almost become a cliche of sorts) I had a friend that bought four of these JBL Control 1s for his house. Why he would buy them I do not know. They were small, inobstrusive and dare I mention, cute. They were s topic of conversation everytime he played his stereo. One problem was that his system lacked bass. I mean look at these pics. Can you see any sort of bass coming out of speakers like this? But I did and still do have a very high opinion of JBLs (Besides some people saying that JBL stands for Jazzy, Bassy and Loud) and these babies had clarity. But I was after something with a bit more kick and one day, I came across this:
The Control 12SR. God, how I wanted these. Imagine, the clarity of the JBL Control series, coupled with the robustness to handle sound reinforment. That is what the SR in these babies stood for. I was ready to plonk down a huge sum of money for it because I did heear that they cost a bomb. Just imagine, a pair of Control 1s back in the day cost about $300. These would have cost a pretty penny! But, they did not have these babies in in Singapore so I had to make do with cheaper Peavey 112H speakers.
I still dream of owning a good pair of speakers. Who knows, if JBL still make these, I will definitely get them
So Sony is stopping the 8mm format. Wonderful thing Twitter is, gives you updates to the latest news. I remember having to use this format once when I was still involved in post-production, Have no fear…seems that you have one month more till Sony stop their production, according to this website. But to be honest, I kind of saw this coming. There is no room for tape in our flash-enabled world of today…unless you count U-Matic and Betacam that is…
Well, here it is. Was checking this out the other day as the sound system I can use it to do small events as my Peavey SP2-ti’s are a bit heavy and will only do justice to big, live shows. This Yamaha Stagepass 500 is small and compact and from what I can see, packing 250 watts, will be more than enough to handle a small show.
From the Yamaha website, I managed to find a very brief specification sheet about these babies

So as you can see, pretty impressive. Phantom power. That means it can even power direct-injection (DI) boxes, or even a condenser microphone. At $1500, this looks pretty good for the price.
Had a bit of shock when I went on Twitter early this morning. Looks like Amy Winehouse was found dead, at 27 years old. That is a shame. She was a talented girl and I, for one, kind of liked her music. Who can forget her song “You Know I’m No Good” when she belted out those lyrics, claiming that she told us she was trouble. Well, the sad thing is to some people, she won’t be trouble no more. Rest in peace Amy. I will miss you.
