Cooler Master computer casing

23/01/2012 Leave a comment

My brother-in-law bought this new computer casing. Told me that it only cost about $60 here in Singapore. Seems that his old Lian Li casing was not his favourite anymore. What I like about this casing is the perforated holes all over. This means that the PC can breathe easier. I am quite happy with the case that I have and have no reason to change it. But when I do, I might get this one.

Dell Inspiron and the missing media kit

03/09/2011 Leave a comment

I posted an article on the Dell media kit (operating system disc) yesterday and had a chat with the Dell representative today online. Upon asking her about the option to purchase the media kit, this is what I got from her:

She actually thinks that backing up my computer is the best way to go about new purchases if one does not have the media kit. Maybe she does not know better, maybe this is a scripted response or maybe she does not want to go to the trouble of finding out why there is no media kit. All I can say is that Dell does not seem to know how to go about solving this and if there is no media kit, there is NO WAY I am going to purchase a Dell. It’s as simple as that.

Do not get me wrong. I am willing to pay for the media kit, and the media kit is available for an optional purchase for other models but not on the model I want. What gives Dell?

Why HP sucks

My ex-company had a global deal with HP. And let me tell you, as an IT manager, facing sub-standard HP products almost every other day, I can safely say, HP sucks. And that is not only my view of HP. Check out Captain Justice and Sam. They feel the same way!

Happy 20th birthday Linux!

26/08/2011 Leave a comment

20 years ago today, a programmer named Linus Torvalds from Finland posted a message on a newsgroup on the 25th August 1991:

Hello everybody out there using minix -

I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.  This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready.  I’d like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things)…

Check out the article in ExtremeTech. All I can say is, Linux is a godsend. Thank you Mr Torvalds!

Hewlett Packard discontinues webOS TouchPads and phones

19/08/2011 1 comment

I do not know if it was lackluster sales at Best Buy that caused HP to rethink its webOS strategy. One does not become a tablet computer superpower overnight. These things take time. But apparently, according to this article in The Register, it seems that “HP also confirmed that it is considering a spinoff of its PC business”. Seems that all the negative press on cyberspace is finally taking its toll, or it wants to follow IBM‘s example by spinning off its PC and laptop business, something IBM did years ago when they sold it to Lenovo. Looks like dark skies ahead at HP.

Mac OS X Lion a nightmare for beginners?

26/07/2011 Leave a comment

I was reading some of the tech blogs that I subscribe to and I came across this one in ExtremeTech. Seems that there are people complaining about it. The very thing that makes people want to change from PCs to Macs (perceived ease-of-use) seems to have been negated. I am not the foremost authority on Apple Macs but the article certainly opened my eyes to what I already suspected long ago….and that is, the fallacy that Macs are easier to use than Windows in general.

Dell Vostro 230

25/07/2011 Leave a comment

Budgets are always tight when running a small business. You need computers, laptops and etcetera, not to mention servers. While servers are absolutely essential to store data, they can wait. What cannot wait is for your workers to hit the ground running. So you need to get the PCs and laptops first. And that is where Dell come in with their incredibly low-priced Vostro desktops, in this case, the Vostro 230

From the reviews I have been reading, this desktop is pretty good. There are heaps of things you can change and add, like for example, the hard disk drive. You can change it for one with more capacity. RAM also can be changed. It comes with Windows 7 Professional too! The Vostro 230 slim tower for one has an online price of  $619. It comes with 2Gb of RAM and a 320Gb hard-disk drive. The Dell Vostro 230 minitower is out of stock at the moment and Dell confirmed that with me through a phone call but I dare say it will be cheaper. And if you do not like Widows, install it with a Linux os like Ubuntu. These Vostros are Ubuntu-friendly

I can almost hear the geeks saying, “Build your own!” Yeah…I agree, but to a certain extent. I always build my own PCs but to a business owner who just needs the goods here and now, this offer cannot be beat. And if you, dear reader, are starting a business, remember, if you cannot get a server, do backups of your data every day. I cannot stress how important backups are to any business.
