Audio-Technica AT2020 review

The Audio-Technica AT2020 microphone is a very popular condenser microphone from Audio-Technica and is extremely popular in Singapore because of its low cost. I have seen some people selling it for as low as $150. There must be a reason for it and after some digging, I found out why.

There is only one polar-pattern and that is cardioid. It is not a true condenser microphones like a Neumann U89 or the AKG C414 BULS which has several polar patterns which can be selected. The U89 for instance, in addition to the usual directional polar patterns: omnidirectional, cardioid, and figure-8, it also has a hypercardioid and wide-angle cardioid characteristic. When compared to the standard cardioid pattern, the hypercardioid characteristic suppresses sound from the side more efficiently. The wide-angle polar pattern is especially useful to record large sound sources.

So as you can see, there is a reason why this AT2020 is so cheap. It is a condenser microphone…yes but for the money, I would get a Shure SM 58 to do my vocals as it is definitely more robust. If you have a small home studio, I suppose that it would be a great boon to you. I personally would use one of these microphones to mike up an acoustic guitar.
