Allen & Heath QU-Pac

I took this picture at an Allen & Heath training session and I was bowled over by what this mixer has to offer. Do not be mistaken…that is a mixer alright. Its like the days of old when you could buy a synthesizer. The Korg 01W was one example. You could buy the synthesizer module too. It is just the heart of the synthesizer without the keys. You just hooked up the module to another keyboard via MIDI and voila! You would be able to have all the Korg’s sounds or voices included in your setup

But back to the QU-Pac. According to Allen & Heath:

Qu-Pac takes the power and legendary quality of the Qu family and shrinks it into an uber-compact desk or rack mount format. Qu-Pac frees you to mix from your iPad, but the full functions of the mixer can also be accessed from the front panel and touchscreen.

With custom settings and Cat5 expansion up to 38 inputs, Qu-Pac provides a scalable, failsafe solution for hardworking bands, schools, hotels, corporate events, live music bars, conferences, personal mixing and many more scenarios requiring a pro mixing solution in a tiny footprint.

User permissions and the customizable Qu-Control screen make Qu-Pac convenient and safe for day-to-day use by non-technical staff.

So there you see, you have a full mixing console controllable via an iPad. Since it does not have faders, there will not be wear and tear. You hook up your iPad via a wireless router and trust me, I have tried it and fell in love with it. It is also rack-mountable. So all you need is maybe a 7U flightcase, mount the mixer in it with a couple of spaces under it to mount a couple of 1U wireless microphone receivers and you are good to go. That is it. Instant mixer for mobile shows and the like. Here, in a nutshell, are its features:

  • 16 acclaimed AnaLOGIQTM recallable preamps
  • 16 on-board Mic / Line Inputs (XLR / TRS)
  • Expandable up to 38 inputs via dSNAKETM
  • 3 Stereo Inputs (TRS)
  • 32 Mono + 3 Stereo Input Channels
  • 12 on-board Mix Outputs (XLR)
  • 4 Stereo Groups
  • 2 Stereo Matrix Outs
  • AES Digital Out
  • 4 DCA Groups
  • 4 Mute Groups
  • Qu-Pad iPad App for all live mixing controls
  • Qu-You iPhone App for personal monitoring
  • Qu-Drive direct Multitrack Recording / Playback on USB drives
  • 15 Soft Keys
  • 16 Custom Select keys
  • Qu-Control custom screen to suit application
  • 4 FX Engines
  • 4 FX Sends / Returns
  • 32×32 USB Audio Interface
  • 5” Touchscreen
  • iLive FX Library
  • Compatible with ME Personal Mixing System
  • Trim, polarity, HPF, gate, insert / ducker, 4-band PEQ, compressor and delay on all Inputs
  • Insert, 4-band PEQ, 1/3 octave GEQ, compressor and delay on all Mix outputs
  • Built-in Signal Generator
  • RTA with Peak Band indication

All I can say is, it is pretty slick and I might buy one for my use. I am seriously thinking about it. Bloody beautiful and I can safely say that it is _not_ that expensive, for a mixer of this calibre and what it is able to do. Extremely worth it.
