Allen & Heath Qu-SB Digital Mixer

I remember feeling pretty chuffed about the Qu-Pac when it came out in 2015 or thereabouts and seriously wanted to have one in my collection. Unfortunately, I could not justify having such a mixer in my inventory as I did not do a lot of big shows. It was only recently when I did an install of a QU-16 at a clients place, and when I was at their website to download the manual, I changed apon this.

What is the QU-SB? Well, it is like a QU-Pac without the screen. I like it because it is relatively inexpensive and given the reviews that I have read so far, it is a fantastic-sounding board. Also, the mixer is sturdy and compact. It’s rack-sized, with optional rack ears available. And trust me…rack ears are useful.

This mixer is no slouch either. You get 16 line and mic inputs for your money; stereo mix inputs; four mono and three stereo outs; main and mix outs; and headphone out. That’s 18 inputs and 14 outputs on its own, but you can expand the system up to 38 inputs and 24 outputs via dSnake, which is a connector that allows multiple audio channels to be carried via a single cable connected to A&H AudioRacks. Most importantly, there’s a Network connector. This is one of the key features on the unit, as this is where you’ll need to connect up to a network via a router to set up the Qu-SB to work with an iPad. Get a good router for this. You will need it.

The QU-Pad software that can be downloaded free of charge from Apple’s App Store is everything you need to control this unit, given that there are no knobs, sliders or anything in front. I have yet to try this QU-SB mixer yet but from what I read, the software is pretty good and controls the mixer nicely. For all the features, take a look below:

  • 16 Mono Inputs (TRS + XLR)
  • 1 Stereo Input (TRS)
  • 12 on-board Mix Outputs (LR, Mono Mix 1-4, Stereo Mix 1-3)
  • 1 Stereo Matrix Out (TRS)
