The Lee family saga and 38 Oxley Road

This has been going on in Singapore for some time, and it has even reached the press overseas. It concerns the house of our founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. His wishes were that when he dies, the house should be demolished. he did not want it to be some kind of “shrine” or monument. But apparently, two of Mr Lee’s children want it demolished and one of Mr Lee’s children, who is our current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, wants to preserve it. The other two, Lee Hsien Yang and Lee Wei Lin, want their father’s wish to be acceded too.

There has been a lot of tit-for-tat these past few days on social media and the press so I will not go into that. I find it a bit uncomfortable, as a Singapore citizen, that something like this was released into public eye. But I will say this. he did tell the press:

I’ve told the Cabinet, when I’m dead, demolish it

Is it so hard to fulfill the man’s dying wish? And that is all I am going to say on this matter.

Many thanks to Reuters for the picture above
