Wooden finger joint on legs of dining room table

30/06/2020 Leave a comment

The dining room table of my mother’s house has legs that have finger joints like these. The problem is that the table legs are giving way and these joints are the ones that are giving the issue. I tried to glue them back together but it has not worked. Looks like I may have to put in some reinforcement struts to make sure that they get all the support they require to be a useful table. I honestly do not know what my parents were doing when they bought a table like that. But then again, one does not know better. I suppose I will have to turn that table upside down one of these weekends and really give it a go at fastening it.

We have a few pizza restaurants here in Singapore where we can get our pizza fix. Unfortunately, Pizza Hut does not count. It is more like a fast-food place. Check out this pizza restaurant in Rome. Italy. the oven is a wood-fired one and those pizzas sure look delicious. Check out the old guy and how he makes the pizzas…and the guy that ladles it in the oven.

The world’s oldest couple met in a college class in 1934

28/06/2020 Leave a comment

I was on the Internet and one of those stories that get recommended to you kind of got my attention. This was from BusinessInsider.com and apparently, this is the world’s oldest couple. According to the article:

The world’s oldest couple still make homemade valentines and enjoy a glass of wine together most nights.

John and Charlotte Henderson of Texas talked to NBC’s “Today” show on Friday about their love story to mark their 85th Valentine’s Day together.

It was love at first sight when the two were seated near each other in a University of Texas zoology class in 1934. Their first date involved going out to get Cokes.

“When I just saw her and got to talking to her, I don’t think I ever had another date after that one day in the class,” John, 107, said.

They were married five years later, in 1939, the same year World War II broke out. They had just two wedding guests present.

According to an October article in the Four Points News, Charlotte, 105, spent the early years of their marriage as a teacher, and John worked for Humble Oil, which later became Exxon (he retired from the company in 1972).

“We produced more than half of the explosives used by the Allies for World War II,” he said.

The couple never had children, a fact John jokingly said might have aided their long life.

Fabulous couple!

The story of David Goggins

There is a saying…you are your own worst enemy. Sometimes, you tell yourself: “Succeed or burst!” Other times you tell yourself: “You can do this”. Many people met varying levels of success by putting their minds to things. But not David Goggins. This guy is proof positive that the determined mind can be a very potent weapon. This the guy that was a fat, 137 kilogram guy but he went on to become a Navy SEAL and a US Ranger. Think about it. Do you have the resolve? I have, to a wee aspect but I do NOT have the resolve of this guy. That is why David Goggins gets my respect. he made up his mind. He became a very determined fellow who banished all fears. How can you NOT respect him? Everyone can learn from him. Even me.

Is the technics SL-1200 GR suitable for DJ-ing?

To be honest, I had my doubts when they first came out. They are pretty expensive to buy and they are aimed at the hi-fi market. But it makes me wonder why the audiophile market would want anything to do with direct-drive turntables. Do they not go for belt-drives? Anyway, I watched this video on YouTube and I must say it is pretty informative. I do not think I can afford one of these turntables anytime soon though.

Sending USB drives to North Korea

25/06/2020 Leave a comment

I have always wondered how much the North Korean people know about life outside their country. I have read various news reports and see many videos on YouTube which tell about oppression of news and information from the outside world. I saw this video on YouTube and it looked very interesting. According to the description on this YouTube video: A small army of activists in Halifax is infiltrating North Korea, one USB drive at a time. It’s all about getting tiny pieces of information into a country that tries to shelter its population from the outside world. Students at Dalhousie University are making videos of life in Halifax and putting them on the USB drives. They are they sent to South Korea where they are put in bottles of rice and dropped in the ocean — set adrift to North Korea where they are sold on the black market, intended for the population there to see something that is otherwise forbidden: images of what freedom looks like.

I just hope that no North Koreans are caught with these USB drives. It could mean severe hardships for them. But I will bet that there are many who will take that risk…and will be enlightened.

Stanley Tylon measuring tape

24/06/2020 Leave a comment

When you work in construction, it is always recommended that you use good quality tools. The tools need to be built tough to survive the rigours of construction use. That is why I swear by this Stanley measuring tape. It is built tough and can handle a lot of abuse. I have used it for some other duties it was not designed for, such as pulling cable under a false floor once. It has been to many project sites with me, has been bashed against by trolleys, boxes and whatever that came its way and it still going strong. Just like all quality tools out there, it may cost a little more but you know that it is worth it in the end.

I came across this fellow’s video and I find it very informative. I do happen to have myself a Macbook Pro Retina 2013 and it is still running fine. No, I have not run out of hard drive space, I am still chugging on just fine on my 512Gb SSD hard drive. But if you ever need to upgrade your Macbook Pro Retina, check out this video. He explains it very well indeed and it looks pretty easy to do. Remember to get the proper screwdrivers though. You need them to open this Macbook Pro Retina.

Can former President Barack Obama serve as Vice President under Joe Biden?

22/06/2020 Leave a comment

That is a question I was asking myself but I did not know the answer to.  Former Vice President Joe Biden is running for the post of President of The United States. Now to the question I posed earlier. Can Mr Biden choose Barack Obama as his running mate for Vice President? Is there anything in the laws which state that a former President of the USA can run as Vice President? According to Snopes.com (a site that I visit pretty often to debunk fake news) the only answer to this hypothetical is that there is no answer: this is an interpretive legal issue that, should it ever arise, would have to be decided by the judicial branch of the U.S. government.

But think about it. It could be something worth looking at, seeing that the current President is seen by many as a complete joke. Well, let us see if this really happens. That will be news for sure!

Avoid Organic Hair Salon in Clementi

21/06/2020 Leave a comment

I came upon this post yesterday on online. Apparently, this lady Suma Lee wrote in her post on Facebook about this hair salon at Block 443 Clementi Avenue 3 named Organic Salon cheated her dad. Check out her post below:

Please beware of this particular hair salon located in Block 443 Clementi Avenue 3- Organic salon

Today, my dad went for a simple hair cut at Organic Salon. He went in with a $3 hair cut voucher distributed outside the hair salon, never expected that he entered into a black shop.

Conversation between my dad and the Malaysian male hair stylist
Dad: 剪头发 $3对吗?(Cut hair $3 right?)
Hairstylist: 对 $3 (Yes)
Dad: Ok
Hairstylist: 好我们先去洗头 ( let’s go wash hair now)
Dad: 为什么要洗头????(why must wash hair?)
Hairstylist: 你的头发很多细菌!要洗头才可以剪 (because your hair is full of bacteria. Must wash then can cut!) My dad thought that due to covid virus so must wash hair first.
Dad: 哇 $3 还有洗头啊 ok lor (wow $3 include wash hair ah. Anyway, The back of my dad shirt get soaking wet after his ‘professional’ hair wash nvm)
Hairstylist: *Did a scalp scan* Uncle 你需要做头皮治疗 不然那些细菌会导致暴血管!(Uncle you need do do hair treatment leh if not the bacteria will lead to your blood vessel burst!!!!) omg this is really funny. 😱😂
Dad: 不要紧啦 剪头发就好。 (No i just want the $3 hair cut)
Hairstylist: *cut hair* 走我们去洗头 (let’s go wash hair again)
Dad: 为什么还要洗?????(why must wash again????)
Hairstylist: 要洗多一次,不然你的头皮会痒 (must wash again if not you will feel itchy) This time round just rinsing without shampoo ok.

Apparently the hairstylist keep pushing for the few thousand dollars hair treatment packages but failed. Bill came $35.

Dad: 不是$3 meh?? (I thought $3 haircut????)
Hairstylist: 对啊 $3 剪头发 但是你洗2次头发啊。(yes correct $3 is for haircut but you washed 2 times hair right )

Dad quickly paid and left feeling disappointed and upset with his uneven haircut…

We hope that this post could raise some awareness on such atrocious scams. Please look out for your parents or grandparents because they love to target unsuspecting elderly!

Remember guys and gals. Boycott this shop. I really hate businesses like these that hoodwink people.
